In keeping with our purpose to produce groundbreaking work in an
intimate, accessible setting, and to expose our community to the
diversity of contemporary theatre by producing new, more recent
work, Theatre O is proud to present the “Outside The
Box” Festival of New Plays!
“Outside the Box” will be held from June 15 –
19, 2010 at Theatre O’s brand new professional black box theater
space in Boulder, Colorado. The festival will offer four evenings
and one full day of original play readings, followed by stimulating
and informative talk-backs between playwrights, directors, actors
and audience.
“Outside the Box” is designed for playwrights, directors
and actors interested in developing and celebrating new plays and
the craft of playwriting, and for theatergoers who love new and
innovative theatre!
Playwright-in-Residence
One of Theatre O’s goals is to develop a deep long term relationship
with a new or relatively unknown playwright. This could evolve into
a Theatre O playwright residency, where they can develop and fully
stage successive new works in collaboration with Theatre O actors,
directors, and other theatre professionals; or it might mean developing
such a relationship with more than one playwright.
Theatre O wants to put the playwright at the center of creative
process, where they are profoundly valued yet challenged to produce
their best work. The collaborative process will be flexible to suit
the unique realities of each piece, and allow the playwright the
opportunity to reorder and combine scenes, and cut and shape material
and characters, right up until opening night.
If we discover such a playwright, Theatre O commits to producing
at least one original piece from them each year. In practical terms,
this would take approximately six to nine months, from commission
to opening night.
Theatre O wants to take risks on new innovative work, and give
such pieces a chance to evolve artistically by enabling the playwright
to refine their work in the rehearsal process, and during successive
productions. This is an ideal arrangement for new playwrights who
don’t want to open their plays cold in New York, and for plays
that need a few productions before New York.
